The Light Movement series returns this summer for the first time since 2018. The series aims to project rarely seen works of personal/poetic cinema in their original formats to a Berlin audience.
This program combines the work of two filmmaker duos: Larissa Krampert & Björn Schmitt from Frankfurt and Petra Graf & James Edmonds from Berlin. Both couples are using super8 and 16mm film to approach their subjects, and both offer a poetic reading of the image, albeit in slightly different ways, through a personal direct cinema that regularly depicts everyday or domestic surroundings as well as more deliberately sort out locations. The screening is chance to bring these two duos works into dialogue, looking at the various approaches to theme, and the way both duos work between depiction and abstraction in varying degrees, from the earlier Super8 colour studies of Graf/Edmonds to the portraits of friends and seasons in the Album series of Krampert/Schmitt. A rare glimpse into the personal filmmaking of two bodies of work that are still, slowly forming and gathered through lived experience.

Larissa Krampert and Björn Schmitt came to filmmaking via the detour of showing films - together with Martin Klein they’re responsible for the programming of exf f. festival in Frankfurt, Germany. Touched by the generous and intimate experience of sharing handmade films with a community, they began to work with Super 8 and 16mm film material themselves.
Petra Graf and James Edmonds are artists from Austria and England, living in Berlin. As a duo they create analogue films, temporary installations and ad-hoc performances. In their films they explore everyday phenomena with an intuitive eye, drawing formal connections between spaces, environments and objects with a quiet sensitivity which is both meditative and structured.
